Beethoven’s youthful first symphony brims with explosive energy, clattering accents and shifting key signatures, foreshadowing his impending greatness. Stravinsky’s ballet was written for the legendary Ballets Russes, and its famous finale has been featured in Fantasia 2000 and many movies and sports programs.
Beethoven originally dedicated his third symphony to Napoleon Bonaparte... until Napoleon declared himself emperor. Enraged, he ripped the front page from his manuscript and scrubbed out Napoleon’s name. More importantly, the symphony ushered in the Romantic era while brilliantly breaking all the rules. The Eroica has captured the hearts and minds of audiences since 1803 with its themes of struggle and triumphant victory.
The Dayton Opera, Dayton Philharmonic, and Dayton Ballet join forces with five additional performing arts organizations in the Dayton area for a tour de force of all that the arts in Dayton have to offer. This performance joins the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance with the Bach Society of Dayton, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, Dayton Gay Men’s Chorus, Human Race Theatre Company and Muse Machine.
