From Mozart To Café Music: Concertmaster And Friends
Dayton Philharmonic Concertmaster Jessica Hung and her musical friends have prepared a feast of piano trios from three centuries. First up, Mozart’s K. 502, which he suggested be played “in friendly, musical, social circles.” Check that box! Think of the wonderful interplay among instruments like a lovely exchange of ideas among friends. Dvořák goes to his ethnic “toolbox” for inspiration for his last Trio: six Dumky, a collection of Slavic folk ballads whose contrasting rhythms and temperaments range from melancholy to serene to boisterous. Contemporary composer Paul Schoenfield described his eclectic Café Music as “a kind of high-class dinner music – music which could be played at a restaurant but might also (just barely) find its way into a concert hall.” ’Nuff said. Just have fun!
