Beethoven 9 “Ode To Joy”

Jun 18 & Jun 19

Schuster Center

Works by Amy Scurria, C. Schumann, and Beethoven’s beloved “Ode to Joy.” Pianist Sara Davis performs along with the DPO, vocal soloists, and the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra Chorus.

This spectacular season of Beethoven’s 250th and Women of Note culminates in Beethoven’s monumental Ninth Symphony. “B 9” embodies the ideals we associate with the composer, expressed majestically and powerfully: the triumph over adversity, the journey from conflict to harmony and from suffering to joy, epitomized in Schiller’s “Ode to Joy,” the text Beethoven set in the final movement. Its words ring out in exultation, celebrating a world united in brotherhood and friendship, while the music’s nobility, optimism, and euphoric harmonies enfold us in a sublime embrace. Concluding our Women of Note celebration, we hear Clara Schumann’s youthful Piano Concerto. Hailed as a virtuoso pianist in her own right and considered an outstanding but overlooked composer of the Romantic Era, she premiered the piece herself. Opening the concert is award-winning Amy Scurria’s Beyond All Walking, inspired by German poet Rainer Maria Rilke’s “The Woman Going Blind.”
