Beethoven 4, Rach 3
Works by Jennifer Jolley, Beethoven, and Rachmaninoff. Pianist Aleksandra Kasman joins.
Ask anyone to name a classical composer, and they’ll probably say “Beethoven.” The DPO pays homage to this musical icon throughout the 2020–2021 season with Beethoven’s 250th. His Fourth Symphony – with the composer in his sunniest, most high-spirited mood – sets things in motion. Aleksandra Kasman, a 2019–2020 Young Artist in Residence of NPR’s Performance Today, plays Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto, a lush, rhapsodic work that has electrified audiences for more than a century. Its quiet start leads into an amazing unleashing of notes and hurtles to a jaw-dropping conclusion. Women of Note showcases two Jennifer Jolley compositions – one muscular, with dramatic percussion and a hint of James Brown, the other, a gentle recollection of her farewell to Vermont.
